The Finns aren’t known to be very talkative, but what they lack in conversational excellence they sure make up for with kick-ass wood heating devices. I was really picky when sourcing a wood burner/stove for this place… this was my must-have list:
- The unit must be small, yet feature at least 5 kW heat output
- Must have a cooking plate
- Must have a top chimney fitting option
- Cannot be brand new (I want that worn look)
Enter the Harvia 10. This little beast ticks all them boxes and is not too crazy heavy either.
It’s a pretty cool unit – it has different locations where you can choose to let the smoke exit. When I bought mine, used, off a nice man in Älvkarleby, this particular unit had the fitting mounted in the rear. So I removed it and switched locations with the metal plate that was mounted on the top of the unit – problem solved.
Just one problem… this bad boy has an extremely unusual and non-standard chimney fitting – 115 mm. Why – no idea, but that’s just how it is. Traditional standards are 120, 150 or even 200 mm so this is really annoying. Luckily, I know people for these types of situations.
My friend Franke (the machinist) borrowed the removable chimney fitting and simply made an adapter. Perfect fit, but for good measure I sealed it all up with chimney sealant. Next time I visit the tower, my Harvia 10 is going to be installed in its readily prepared corner. Yay!
